About this deal

NOTE: This edition features the same content as the traditional text in a convenient, three-hole-punched, loose-leaf version. Bottom line: Very well-done introduction, despite several flaws, and especially strong on applications. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). Professor Lay has received four university awards for teaching excellence, including, in 1996, the title of Distinguished Scholar-Teacher of the University of Maryland.

The chapter on eigenvalues is relatively weak; it covers all the techniques, but the applications are limited to dynamical systems and the interest is in taking high powers of a matrix. It gives a great insight into linear algebra and the format is such that it is not overwhelmingly theoretical. The book cover has no visible wear, and the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. Linear Algebra is a crucial topic for understanding probability, quantum mechanics, and a whole slew of other topics in engineering and mathematics. In 1994, he was given one of the Mathematical Association of America's Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. There is a printed student guide available and a great deal of supplemental material for students on the web, including two additional chapters intended for a second course.

Strang seemed like a very nice guy when I saw him speak, but his book is no match for Lay's in terms of doing awesome things like making wonderful lists of all the 50 different statements that mean the same thing (for example: determinant of matrix is nonzero <-> matrix has full rank <-> matrix's columns are linearly independent <-> etc. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematics Association of America, and the Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences. Each section starts with working examples to demonstrate how tools from linear algebra can help solve problems in applied sciences. And I can add that it's a very handy reference to breeze through when you need to brush up on basics for a more advanced course that relies on this stuff.Steven is also the author of three college-level mathematics texts: Convex Sets and Their Applications, Analysis with an Introduction to Proof , and Principles of Algebra. Gilbert Strang's lectures on Linear Algebra on MIT Open Courseware are excellent and I recommend them. She has been an active member of the International Linear Algebra Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics throughout her career and has also been a member of the Canadian Mathematical Society, the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. We learn about the fundamental idea of representing a linear combination of vectors as a product of a matrix and a vector.

Several undergraduate and graduate students have written projects or theses on linear algebra under Judi’s supervision. The book gradually introduces more abstract structures as it goes along, including linear transformations, vector spaces, orthogonality, and n-dimensional geometry. The author presents the topics in a traditional course, yet offers lectures as well as lab exercises on simulated and empirical data sets.

Since then he has supported his brother David in refining and expanding the scope of this popular linear algebra text, including writing most of Chapters 8 and 9. The book is a comprehensive introduction to linear algebra and incorporates some examples of practical applications. Lay is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the International Linear Algebra Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

This chapter covers amongst others the characteristic equation, diagonalization and iterative algorithms to estimate eigenvalues. He has been elected by the university students to membership in Alpha Lambda Delta National Scholastic Honor Society and Golden Key National Honor Society. This was my first major text in linear algebra, although I already knew some basic properties of matrices. Students, if MyLab is a recommended/mandatory component of the course, please ask your instructor for the correct ISBN. This is a no-frills textbook for a one-semester course in linear algebra that focuses very heavily on algorithms and applications.

his textbook is an excellent introduction to the subject of linear algebra with an attempt to understand the subject intuitively and visually. He focuses on why theorems are true and what they mean, rather than just grinding through the proofs. But complaints aside, Strang is to be commended for focusing on the conceptual framework of linear algebra, with matrices as general linear operators, and eigenvalues/eigenvectors of matrix as fundamental properties of systems' dynamical evolution, instead of just throwing all the math at us and hoping that we can sort it out.
