Oswald smiled. “Do you imagine you were discreet in that thought, Linnet?” he asked making her laugh.

Aye,” agreed Mason looking relieved. “She was waiting for the right occasion to speak to you of it. We thought - hoped - you would stay on with us longer.” The smile dropped from Linnet’s face. She looked down at her sleeping baby. “Is it true you are the King’s spymaster now, Oswald?”

He rolled onto his side taking her with him, so his weight was no longer pinning her to the pillows. “You’re not in discomfort?” he clarified, carefully dropping his hand to cup her bottom. His Forsaken Bride started out rather well. I even didn’t mind that Oswald was a cunning snake, who married (kind-off) Fen for his own gain. He of course seemed nothing like the Oswald in Her Baseborn Bridegroom, but that was okay, because that was Oswald being seen through the eyes of Mason and Linnet, so he was bound to be different. I really liked reading about Fenella and Oswald but surprisingly, I enjoyed the other parts of this book too. I found it entertaining watching Fenella balance court life and the politics that surround it. While there were a lot of characters to remember, I found myself following each of their side stories fairly easily too. As to that...” He shrugged. “I've always kept my own counsel, and never been much for sharing confidences.” Does that mean you have accepted me as such?” He had to work to keep his voice calm and even. He sounded confrontational, though it was not his intention.

Fenella surprised her by holding out her hand for the missive. She had herself received a letter from Ambrose two weeks ago that had mentioned no word of it. There's not really a bad guy in this one. I love the way the author can take everyday life and weave it through the renewed acquaintance of lost loves. And that is all that is needed to make an interesting and romantic read. You feel like you know where the story is going, but it never plays out like you think it will. Thank goodness! There is just one slim chance to avoid this fate, one person of prominence at court who she knows has the ear of the King. Oswald Vawdrey, the man who cruelly jilted her when she was a starry-eyed fifteen year old with a head full of romantic dreams. We would not suit each other at all you know,” said Oswald. “Enid would be a demanding sort of wife. She would not appreciate a husband who left her in the country while he pursued his career at court.”

Did he?” Oswald was startled. “He never mentioned it to me. Just told me to look after his dogs and Meldon,” he said dryly. Meldon was the Vawdrey family retainer and a curmudgeonly old sod that Oswald would rather pension off then keep in his employ. Indeed ‘tis so.” Her sister-in-law held up her letter with a flourish. “Do you wish to see it in his own hand?” she asked. “I don’t wish to be indelicate… Of course my brother writes to tell me all. It was always so, ever since he was a babe he has always confided in me and me alone,” she gloated. Fenella’s eyes widened, but she re-filled his cup. He took it and carried it with him toward the bedroom. He heard her footsteps following him as trusting as a lamb, and prayed for strength. He had promised her, that he would be considerate and give her time. His hard, yearning body did not care one whit for this. It was aching and ready to cleave to her and none other. She shut the bedroom door behind them and he set the wine down by his bedside and unbuttoned the top of his tunic. The wine was already flowing through his veins, making him flushed, though it had not taken the edge yet off his need. He could hear rustling behind him and guessed she was retrieving her new gowns to show to him. Gowns he had absolutely no interest in seeing. He shut his eyes briefly and steeled himself to ignore the steady pulse in his groin. Abstinence had been a way of life for him for so long, that desire was almost a stranger to him. He had honestly thought he could sleep beside a wife and it not mess with equanimity in the slightest. He had been a bloody fool. My biggest complaint - Fen was too passive. Everything happened to Fen, the divorce, the play, the painting, the gossips. There wasn’t much Fen actually did out of her own accordance. To be honest I didn’t understand, why? Why did she not talk to Oswald about the play? I really didn’t feel like it was a big enough plot point to create such an entire mess over. It could have easily been stopped if she had just shut it down in the beginning. Oswald lost his head since the beginning: he became jealous-crazy! He manipulated poor Fenella until she didn't understand anything at all!!!

She paused, considering a moment, then shook her head. “Please stay safe,” she urged. “You have made your fortune now and earned your new title. Can you not look to retire from such dangerous service to the crown?” You're not returning to court so soon?” asked Mason with a heavy frown. “Our Father has not been buried for more than a sennight.” It was news to Oswald that his bluff, blustering father had any pride in his quiet oldest son and heir. If he had, it was the first he'd ever heard of it. He opened his mouth and then closed it again. After all, what was the point in being churlish over the fact he and his father had never seen eye-to-eye? “I can't see where this conversation is going Linnet,” he admitted. Lonely?” repeated Oswald blankly. “Linnet I'm surrounded at any time by the King's court, some hundred or so people, not counting servants!”

Fenella Thane is a desperate woman. Her absentee husband of eight years has served her with divorce papers and she looks likely to lose her beloved home and be forced into a convent. While I didn’t like Oswald’s story as much as I did Mason’s, I truly enjoyed it! These brothers are proving to be perfect in the possessive alpha hero department. Oswald smiled as he watched her fussily arrange Archie on her lap. “No doubt,” he agreed. He had a suspicion it was not Cuthbert she wanted to discuss with him. Feeling pressure from predicted actions of the King, Oswald uses the opportunity with Fen to save himself from a situation he has no desire to find himself in. With every intention of carrying on with his life as it has been, he soon realizes that he cannot imagine a day, much less a night, without Fen at his side. What was once a well-organized life becomes filled with inopportune thoughts of her when he should be giving everything to the intrigues that surround court life. Fenella and Oswald were betrothed when he was 19 and she was 12. She loved him with a massive school-girl crush. But then Oswald went to war and his father ended the betrothal in favour of other more lucrative betrothals for his oldest son.
