About this deal

On the whole; this may not be as great as House of Whipcord, but House of Mortal Sin is further proof that Pete Walker really knows how to make his audience think and comes recommended. and avoiding all sins, especially the mortal sins ( negative) which are the cause of Our Lord Jesus Christ’s Passion and Death on the Cross. Keith’s role is limited, and she does not appear for at least half an hour, however when she does her talent commands all attention.

House Of Mortal Sin — British Horror Films

The heroine was a symbol of her day, a symbol for spunkiness, free expression and the questioning of authority. Walker films have a strong, dirty 70s feel and to over digitize a print like this could well result in a completely different ambiance. Splendid performance by Anthony Sharp (remember him as the government minister in A Clockwork Orange?Outwardly a kind-hearted counsellor of troubled youth, Meldrum is in fact a fervent believer in " divine justice" who freely resorts to emotional abuse in his obsessive efforts to redeem those he views as sinners. The Catechism is explicit about the grave nature of particular sins, including sacrilege (2120), blasphemy (2148), perjury (2152), deliberately avoiding Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation (2181), murder (2268), hatred of neighbor “when one deliberately desires him grave harm” (2303), prostitution (2355), sexual relations outside marriage (2390), and adulation that “makes one an accomplice in another’s vices or grave sins” (2480).

House of Mortal Sin - Wikipedia

The gore and violence is less outrageous than in "Frightmare" but the priests' killing methods are quite ingenious and, of course, religiously themed, like poisoned sacred wafers and rosary strangulations. Hearing that her friend Bernard has become a Catholic priest, Jenny attends church to seek him out but finds that the man taking confession is not Bernard, but the elderly Father Meldrum. org/wiki/Pete_Walker_(director) , he had made films that fell under various categories in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, frequently using the same cast of characters. So he's perfect casting as sexually obsessive Catholic priest Father Meldrum in this film, a man who gets his kicks in the confession box by asking his parishioners for more sexual details than is strictly necessary. This is another tale of moral hypocrisy, misogyny, and perversion at the hands of supposed peacekeepers, very much like House of Whipcord except that Whipcord veers into the “women in prison” genre whereas this one focuses on an insane and corrupt priest.Otherwise, “one commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law, or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent” (CCC 1862). Then on to our baddie, who turns out to be a very silly mama's boy who never knew about the woman who really loved him all along. John says, “all wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal” just as “there is sin which is mortal” (1 John 5:16,17). Still, having been aware of the woman for less than a year, I'm ready to put Keith on a list of my favorite actresses in horror movies alongside the likes of Barbara Steele and Edwige Fenech. Paul likewise gives lists in Galatians 5:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 of sins whose practitioners will not “inherit the kingdom of God.

Walker's intention clearly was to shock audiences and to stimulate an angry reaction from the Church. Bernard discovers the bodies of Terry and Vanessa and confronts Meldrum, who claims that Brabazon committed the murders out of love for him. Just the quiet shot of the parishioners in SIN sitting joylessly and gullibly on the pews in the dank church are as disturbing as the shots of bloodshed. The funniest parts are with the good Priest and his love affair with perpetually ditzy looking Stephanie Beacham. Norman Eshley was great in the TV sitcom, GEORGE AND MILDRED, and is clearly great at playing roles in comedic settings elsewhere. It's an entertaining tale of one Priest's madness and the young girl who tries to reveal his secret. The two sisters (staples of the other two films in the trilogy though used in different relationships) were well-cast.

As the tortured priest, Anthony Sharp brilliantly veers between whining, childish self-pity and stone-faced, stone-hearted bombast, characterising the hypocrisy that Walker sees in the Catholic Church. This feature—along with the two aforementioned films and the later release Schizo (1976)—demonstrates how this pairing produced some of Walker’s most interesting and shocking work. As always with Pete Walker there's beautiful women, in this case sexy Stephanie Beacham and the very cute Susan Penhaligon, but sadly not much in the way of nudity, or gore for that matter, it's one of Walkers tamer efforts, as if he was aiming for mainstream respectability! She goes to the presbytery and encounters Mrs Meldrum, who knows that her son is mad and begs Vanessa to help.Originally Peter Cushing was offered to play Father Xavier Meldrum and at the time there were some rumours that Cushing hated the script. In the same year, he followed up with another wry stab at British justice when he cast Sheila Keith as the cannibalistic, drill-wielding grandmother in Frightmare. In other words, the Ten Commandments lay out “the first principles” of the moral law; they’re not an exhaustive list of every serious sin. The filmmaker successfully transitioned from sexploitation to straight up horror throughout the early part of the 1970’s and was certainly earning a reputation from critics as a director who was not afraid to touch on controversial themes in his work. That’s a strange answer, but he explains: “Mortal sins are not all directly opposed to the precepts of the Decalogue [Ten Commandments], but only those which contain injustice: because the precepts of the Decalogue pertain specially to justice and its parts.
