In a distant future, Earth has become so overrun with junk that people have started firing it into the atmosphere, creating a thick layer of trash known as The Soup orbiting the planet.

Some awesome world-building here, but I had a hard time suspending my disbelief when it came to Atti, who just a read a little too human, but I'm sure younger YA readers will thoroughly enjoy this adventurous, friendship-focused book. Back on the wasteland of Earth, engineer Railey and her bio-robotic gecko Atti dream of winning the drone races in dusty Boxville – but when a terrifying bounty hunter hijacks their race to look for them, they’re forced to hide in the rubbish-filled atmosphere above. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Ik denk dat ik beter geen kinderboeken meer lees… Ookal was dit een sci-fi met een gezelschapsdier / robot.

This story has a strong ecological message and among the very real issue of space debris explored by the author in the course of this story. Les personnages sont aussi crédibles que des geckos volants : la petite de 9 ans est plus compétente que celle de 16 ans de sait rien faire de ses 10 doigts. I would recommend it to pretty much everyone, especially for people who enjoy sci-fi stories, or are passionate about the environment.Entre courses de drones, réflexion écologique et rebondissements, impossible de s’ennuyer… mais honnêtement le fait de ne pas avoir plus d’explications sur l’univers m’a totalement sortie de ma lecture. Long-legged Liam makes a giant leap for boy-kind by competing with a group of adults for the chance to go into space. City Of Rust by Gemma Fowler, A climate sci-fi fantasy with a strong eco-message about a robotic gecko and the junker clan who are trying to save earth from a huge 'trash bomb.

This is an interesting sci-fi dystopia adventure with surprising settings and views of this (very possible) future. There was nothing wring with the story per se I just felt a bit bored and didn't care enough I think. A crazed maniac trying to destroy the world, a robotic gecko, some cool characters and a great plot. But their passion for racing isn’t as straight-forward as it seems, and when they clash with the Junkers – space-dwelling junk salvagers – the skills they possess will be required in a life and death fight with a junk bomb and a vengeful mob that would gladly watch it wreak devastation. Rescued by a couple of Junker kids, they discover a danger bigger than anything they'd imagined - but can three kids, a gecko and an ancient computer save the world against the huge trash bomb (and its power-crazed creator) threatening to destroy the world?

They’re best friends, companions, and they love racing drones together in their container-constructed city of Boxville. Im not quite the target demographic, (besides it was the cover design itself that attracted me to the book, never underestimate the power of visual draw, good design and an exciting palette. There are heart-in-throat moments, and, thanks to Gemma’s incredibly visual writing (I felt like I was watching a film throughout), it feels urgent and real. Also, it’s made junk a form of money in a way-so you need it to live, but fear for your life from it at the same time. Care was absolutely wonderful as a secondary character, as was Laurie, and I defy anyone not to adore Tring, who is an AI NannyBot.
