Description

Dartmoor is full of surprises and unexpected hidden gems, but often you need to be with someone who knows the secrets or you may well miss out! See our guides listed here.

We recommend learning at least basic navigations skills, there are lots of training courses available on and around Dartmoor. Find out more about Dartmoor's landscape and the people who live and work here by meeting one of our upland farmers. All Ten Tors groups have the chance to meet and talk to a Dartmoor farmer before one of their training days.

OS Explorer OL28, Harveys Dartmoor North (better marking of bogs), or OpenStreetMap (good for paths and bogs) Great Links Tor. Beast of a tor dominating the westflank of Dartmoor. Provides sensational views of Dartmoor's north moor, the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Cornwall. I will not be held liable for any damages caused, as this is just a piece of advice as to how difficult tor bagging can get. The rule of the thumb from me is to always try and view the outcrop from public land, and if this is not possible due to tree cover etc, then please respect landowners' wishes by staying away if they do not welcome visitors. I've found that being granted landowner permission to visit an outcrop is one of the most rewarding things I have achieved during this challenge. The open moorland provides an important breeding area for ground nesting birds, but if they get disturbed they can abandon their nests or young. Make sure you know where the rare bird nesting areas are and plan your route to avoid them from 1 March - 31 July.

Great big thanks to Vaude for putting a lightweight tent over my head to giving me a cosier alternative to my 3 man Taurus! The route is a circuit, of roughly 330 miles (measured with string on a 1:50,000 OS map). I’ll be going to each tor once and only once, not leaving the Open Access Land where possible. Tors/walks close by – Beechcroft Plantation offers the ideal spot for a picnic with views, on the exposed banks of the reservoir. Sharp Tor (Dartmeet/East Dartmoor). Many of Dartmoor's classic views are provided by tors overlooking steep-sided wooded valleys and gorges. There's Sharp Tor in the Teign Gorge, Ger Tor above Tavy Cleave and the Dewerstone above the Dewerstone Valley. Perhaps the best of the lot is the view from Sharp Tor above Dart Gorge. Harton Chest (Lustleigh Cleave). Small outcrop at the top of Lustleigh Cleaveproviding huge views over the east section of the National Park down to the South Devon coast.

Sharp Tor (Dartmeet/East Dartmoor). Easily accessible tor providing a classic view of the Dart Gorge in the east of Dartmoor. Thanks to Firepot (Eat Outdoor Food) who are providing some light-weight, high-calorie meals to keep me going! Steeperton Tor. As above. Beautiful tor in the north section of Dartmoor overlooking a natural amphitheatre of moorland. Amazing views and a great place to visit from Belstone in winter when it has snowed. East Dartmoor consists of 3 joined but distinct areas: Yarner Wood, Trendlebere Down and the Bovey Valley Woodlands. Together they provide an excellent example of internationally important western oakwood with its associated bird and lower plant communities.

This ancient western oak woodland's a great place to leave behind the pressures of everyday life. The path goes from one end of the woods to the other, with the sound of the river's many rapids and cascades ever present. Bench Tor.Topping a spur of moorland that juts out into the Dart Gorge, Bench Tora breathtaking place.

Fur Tor. As above. One for keen walkers and Dartmoorenthusiasts, Fur Tor is located in the heart of the National Park's north moor. Sensational views. Those years got me four events (as we call Ten Tors) under my belt: 35, 45 twice and 55. I was the first girl across the line on the 50th Anniversary of the event. My team finished a 45 mile route at 7:56am on Sunday morning – although sadly only in training. But when you’re doing 10 tors, you can’t help wondering if it’s possible to do all of them in one go… Why Now? Ponies grazing at Leather Tor, Dartmoor National Park, Devon Photo: Greig Barclay (Image: Photo: Greig Barclay)Roos Tor.Roos is the northernmost tor in a cluster of outcrops on the western side of Dartmoor National Park. It's near the stunning and much photographed Great Staple Tor and overlooks Langstone Moor with its stone circle, standing stone and stone row. Great Mis Tor dominates to the east. The view north along the flank of the high moor to Great Links Tor is beautiful. No one has ever tried to walk all the tors in one go before. This might be because no one’s ever agreed on how many there actually are… (see disclaimer below).
